In the fascinating book Interaction of Color, Josef Albers used a series of silk screen plates to demonstrate the importance of context: a colored block would look relatively darker than an identical block elsewhere on the page, simply due to the different colors in the surroundings. Inspired by this work, along with revolutionary pieces from Bridget Riley and Robert Irwin, Concept in Context explores the topic of relativity with a CMYK print and a black filter - Depending on how one interacts with the layers, the image could appear either relatively monotone or relatively multicolor; relatively still or relatively in motion; relatively clockwise spinning or relatively counter clockwise spinning... All the perceptions are true as relative to their context - Just as relativity, in itself, is a concept in context.
